Bears San Diego is a family of warm and friendly bears and those who love them. Bears San Diego accept others for who they are. Our mission is to bring together people of a common interest on a social basis, and throughout the year, raise funds for charity.

We envision a world where everyone in the Bear and LGBTQ+ communities feels seen, valued, and empowered—united by friendship, service, and pride. Through inclusive gatherings and charitable efforts, Bears San Diego strives to be a beacon of support, belonging, and joy.

Frisky, Friendly, & Attitude Free Safe Spaces—and we take this very seriously. Everyone is human and mishaps take place. But the President and Board of Bears San Diego, along with our title holders and more active volunteers, work hard to ensure our private and public events are not only safe, but open to all of our members.
HISTORY
Bears San Diego was established in October 1994 with a clear and heartfelt mission: To create a welcoming, affirming space for individuals often overlooked by mainstream LGBTQIA+ culture. What began as a grassroots effort quickly evolved into a thriving, dynamic community rooted in authenticity, connection, and acceptance. Bears San Diego embraces a broad and diverse spectrum of people — not defined by body type, gender, or expression, but by shared values of respect, celebration, and belonging. We proudly uplift individuals of all shapes, sizes, and identities, especially those who have not always seen themselves reflected in traditional LGBTQIA+ spaces.
In 2003, the organization took an important step toward long-term impact by beginning the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. That vision became reality in 2006, when we received full nonprofit status from the IRS, formally recognizing our work in building community and supporting charitable causes throughout the San Diego region. Today, Bears San Diego stands as both a social hub and a community-driven fundraising organization, governed by transparent practices and committed to equity, inclusion, and service. Through our events, programs, and partnerships, we create opportunities for people to connect, express themselves freely, and support those in need. Our membership includes people from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum — bears, cubs, otters, allies, and everyone in between — united by a shared desire to belong and to make a difference.
Whether we’re hosting a bar night, organizing a community fundraiser, planning a movie outing, or welcoming someone to their very first event, Bears San Diego creates moments that matter — moments that remind people they’re not alone. We invite donors, partners, and friends to join us in this mission.
